Who we are
We are a community of meditators and friends who meet up on Sunday afternoons. We meet at various gardens and parks around NYC (and interesting indoor spaces during the winter). After the initial hellos and chatting, we settle down and sit silently for 45 minutes. The sit is followed by a walk to a nearby coffee shop for socializing for anyone who wants to stick around.
Some things to know about us:
-All are welcome, and will be made to feel welcome. If you worry that you might feel unwelcome because of your personality, background, beliefs, perceived social ability, meditation experience, skepticism of spirituality… then you are especially welcome. You don’t even have to sit for the 45mins. We only require that you 1)aren’t disruptive during the sit and 2)aren’t actively a jerk on a consistent basis.
-We don’t do robes, sashes, titles, hierarchy, needless jargon. Dharma talks can be immensely insightful- but their resonance is so person-dependent and they are abundantly accessible online, so we don’t do them at our sits. We don’t do any activism or political hectoring or religious proselytization.
-We do not practice in a single tradition or lineage. We’re averse to dogma, but we’re interested in a diversity of teachings from sundry sources both new and old. We find that comparing notes on what everybody is doing in their meditation practice has been amazingly valuable for our learning and progress.
-We value the pragmatic. We value individual variance. We embrace setting goals, building skills, and making progress in meditation. While we recognize the value of self-help and therapy that can be complimentary modalities for some, we are focused on meditation as a means for awakening in this lifetime.
